North Carolina holds 563 Presbyterian congregations in the Churches List directory, the southern anchor of the Scots-Irish corridor that runs down the Appalachian spine from Pennsylvania. The tradition spreads across 219 North Carolina cities and towns, and 23 of its buildings carry National Register listings — the highest register rate of any denomination-state block in this series, roughly one listed building per 24 congregations.

Charlotte leads with 46 Presbyterian listings, the city founded by Scots-Irish settlers whose county is named for a Presbyterian queen. Greensboro holds 19, Fayetteville 14, and the Piedmont mill towns — Monroe, Gastonia, Concord — fill the next tier.

Which North Carolina cities have the most Presbyterian churches?

The geography is the Great Wagon Road made visible: Scots-Irish families came down from Pennsylvania through the Shenandoah Valley in the 1750s and planted kirks across the Piedmont, which is why the tradition's map hugs the I-85 corridor and thins toward both the coast and the Baptist mountain coves. Charlotte's 46 includes Steele Creek Presbyterian, register-listed and among the oldest congregations in the region; Fayetteville's 14 mark the separate Highland Scots settlement on the Cape Fear.

Where Presbyterian congregations stand in North Carolina: the map

The map shows the 60 selected congregations from the table above.

How Presbyterian's North Carolina footprint compares nationally

Against the national 9,877, North Carolina's 563 trails only Pennsylvania's 872 in this directory — the two ends of the same migration. The 23 register-listed buildings outnumber Pennsylvania's Presbyterian listings, reflecting how completely the brick-and-white-portico Presbyterian church defines the Piedmont town landscape. Within the state, the tradition holds 3.5 percent of 16,249 churches, concentrated enough in its corridor to feel far larger there.

How this map was assembled

Counts come from the Churches List directory snapshot of June 11, 2026: 563 congregations in North Carolina carry the Presbyterian tradition label, out of 9,877 nationwide and 16,249 North Carolina churches of all traditions. Tradition labels derive from each congregation's source records and self-description; 278 of the North Carolina listings carry a website. The directory does not rank congregations. Corrections are applied through the corrections page.
