Philadelphia has 490 churches with at least one mapped transit stop within a quarter mile, out of 1,227 Philadelphia congregations in the Churches List directory. That 39.9 percent coverage rate is the lowest among the ten cities in this series, and it says more about the map than the city: SEPTA's network is dense, but the OpenStreetMap stop data behind these counts covers Center City far more completely than the rowhouse neighborhoods.

Baptist congregations lead the transit-reachable count at 131, followed by Catholic parishes at 60, Non-Denominational churches at 52, and African Methodist Episcopal congregations at 34, the largest AME transit cohort in this series outside the South. The best-connected building in the data is the Albanian Orthodox Church near 15th Street with 33 mapped stops, followed by Arch Street United Methodist Church beside City Hall and Saint Stephen's on the Market East blocks, each with 28.

Riding to church in Philadelphia: what to check before Sunday

Philadelphia's transit data rewards a skeptical read. Three checks before a Sunday trip:

  • Do not rule out a church with zero mapped stops. With coverage at 39.9 percent, an unmapped Philadelphia church often still sits on a SEPTA bus route; check the SEPTA trip planner against the address on the church page.
  • Use the rail names in the stop list. Center City churches list stops like 15th Street and 11th Street, which are subway and trolley stations with reliable Sunday service, a stronger signal than a generic bus stop.
  • Confirm service times by phone. 490 transit-reachable listings across 1,227 total means the directory's phone numbers do the final filtering.

How the transit data was mapped

Stop locations come from OpenStreetMap, collected by the directory's nightly enrichment pass: every stop node within roughly 400 meters (a quarter mile) of a church building counts as a mapped stop. 490 of 1,227 Philadelphia listings have at least one as of June 11, 2026. A mapped stop does not guarantee Sunday service on that route; check the transit agency's schedule before traveling. Corrections to any listing go through the corrections page.
