Orange County beats the national average — 52.3% of its 1,065 churches have no website, against 70.9% nationally. But the county average hides a fifty-point spread between its cities, and only 10 congregations have a verified Google profile.
Orange County is not where we expected to find the story. Across the United States, seven in ten churches have no website. In California the figure is 63.0 percent. In Orange County it is 52.3 percent — better than the state, far better than the country, and still more than half.
We hold 1,065 congregations in Orange County, spread across 47 cities and 51 traditions. 557 of them have no web address on record.

That last figure is the one worth pausing on. Ten congregations in the entire county — under one percent — have a verified Google Business Profile. Nationally the profile is the single strongest predictor of a church also having a website: churches that hold one are only 8.1 percent likely to lack a site, against 70.9 percent for churches generally. In the county with more than a million monthly local searches at its door, almost nobody has claimed the free record that answers them.
The gap is a city-level problem, not a county-level one
A county average of 52.3 percent hides a spread of nearly fifty points. Brea and Buena Park sit where rural Mississippi sits. Fullerton sits where New England sits.

Santa Ana is the case that matters most. It is the county seat and its largest working-class city, it holds 88 congregations, and 60 of them cannot be found online. The neighbourhoods with the most churches per resident have the fewest churches on the web.
Tradition predicts more than geography
Inside one county, with one economy and one housing market, the spread by tradition runs from 14 percent to 78 percent.

What the gap costs a small congregation
A church without a page is not merely quiet. It is absent from the moment when someone decides where to go on Sunday, and that moment now happens almost entirely in a search box.
The free steps, in the order that pays
- Claim the Google Business Profile. Free, roughly ten minutes, and it is what actually answers a near me search. Ten of 1,065 Orange County churches have done it — the cheapest advantage available in the county is also the least taken.
- Put service times somewhere permanent. One page with an address, a service time and a phone number beats a social account last posted to in 2019.
- Claim the directory listing. If your congregation is here, you can take control of the entry and correct it; if it is missing, add it. Both free, neither requires a website.
- Name a person. A working number and someone who answers it outperforms a designed homepage nobody maintains.
None of the four requires a budget. The first three require an afternoon. That the county's largest churches have done them and its smallest have not is a difference in available attention, not in conviction.
How we counted
Counted from the Churches List database on . Congregations are assigned to Orange County through the US Census 2020 ZCTA-to-county relationship file, using the ZIP on each record.
Limits worth stating
- A church counts as having a website if its record carries a non-empty web address. We did not test whether each address still resolves, so the true share with a working site is somewhat lower, not higher.
- A social media page is not a website here. Congregations that maintain only a Facebook presence are counted as having none. Read 52.3 percent as an upper bound on invisibility.
- City totals use the mailing city on the record, which does not always match municipal boundaries. Cities under 20 congregations are excluded from the table because a single church moves the percentage too far.
- The Google-verified count reflects profiles our pipeline has matched and confirmed. Some churches may hold a profile we have not matched, so treat 10 as a floor.
