Minneapolis leads with 92 Lutheran listings and St. Paul holds 53, but the real Lutheran country is rural: Duluth (22), Rochester (19), Mankato (18), Fergus Falls (17), and Roseau (15) head a long roll of farm towns where the Lutheran church is the town's largest building.

Which Minnesota cities have the most Lutheran churches?

The city list above is unique in this series for how little it concentrates: the top eight cities hold barely 14 percent of the state's Lutheran congregations. Scandinavian and German settlement planted a congregation in nearly every township, and synod splits — ELCA, Missouri, Wisconsin — often left two or three Lutheran churches in towns of a thousand people. Fergus Falls and Roseau, with 17 and 15 listings, are towns of under 15,000 each.
