14,963total Florida churches in the directory

66 Florida churches stand on the National Register of Historic Places among the 14,963 congregations in the state's directory. The earliest listing came on October 15, 1966, the day the register itself opened: Fort Caroline Baptist Church in Jacksonville entered with the founding cohort. Duval County leads the state with 12 register-listed churches, followed by Alachua, Orange, and Miami-Dade at 5 each.

Florida's register churches skew younger than the Northeast's because the state does: territorial-era parishes are rare, and much of the list documents the railroad and resort boom of the 1880s through 1920s, when Henry Flagler's coastline filled with congregations as fast as with hotels.

When did Florida churches enter the National Register?

Florida's listing curve is unusually active in the present: 18 churches entered the register in the 1990s, the state's peak decade, but the 2020s have already added 9, matching the 2000s total with years to spare. The 1970s wave (15 listings) caught the obvious landmarks; the current wave is documenting Black church history and small-town sanctuaries that earlier surveys passed over.

Where the register-listed churches stand: the map

How this list was assembled

The list joins the Churches List directory (14,963 Florida congregations as of June 11, 2026) against the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places database by building location and name. 66 matches hold as of the snapshot date; the earliest Florida church listing dates to 1966. A register listing covers the building, not the congregation, and some listed buildings house congregations younger than the walls. Corrections are applied through the corrections page.
