Texas holds 7,185 Baptist congregations in the Churches List directory, the largest denomination-state block on the platform: 31 percent of the state's 23,267 churches and nearly one in ten of America's 74,720 directory-listed Baptist congregations. The tradition spreads across 977 Texas cities and towns, which is to say almost all of them.

Houston leads with 505 Baptist listings, Dallas holds 298, Fort Worth 243, and San Antonio 177. Nine Texas Baptist buildings carry National Register listings, and 1,001 congregations publish websites.

Which Texas cities have the most Baptist churches?

The city table reads as a map of Texas itself: after the big four come Austin (107), Tyler (80), and Waco (79) — Waco being home ground for much of institutional Texas Baptist life. But the deeper story is the long tail: roughly nine in ten of these 7,185 congregations sit outside the five biggest cities, in county seats and farm towns where the Baptist church anchors the square. In hundreds of Texas towns the directory lists no other tradition at all.

Where Baptist congregations stand in Texas: the map

The map shows the 60 selected congregations from the table above.

How Baptist's Texas footprint compares nationally

Against the national picture, Texas's 7,185 makes it the heaviest single state for the tradition in this directory. The Baptist belt runs east from here through the South, and Texas anchors its western end; the directory's other Baptist deep-states, Georgia (5,445) and North Carolina (5,772), complete the triangle. Within Texas, the tradition's share thins from east to west with the rainfall line, a settlement pattern still visible in the county map above.

How this map was assembled

Counts come from the Churches List directory snapshot of June 11, 2026: 7,185 congregations in Texas carry the Baptist tradition label, out of 74,720 nationwide and 23,267 Texas churches of all traditions. Tradition labels derive from each congregation's source records and self-description; 1,001 of the Texas listings carry a website. The directory does not rank congregations. Corrections are applied through the corrections page.
