These 615 congregations are the documented pioneers of American church life online: small institutions that published on the web before most American businesses did.

The earliest cohort is strikingly ordinary. The first five captures include a Baptist church in South Carolina, an Episcopal parish in Deming, New Mexico, two Michigan congregations, and a Catholic parish in Philadelphia. A pre-2001 first capture is evidence of two things at once. The state distribution rewards a second look. Texas leads with 65 pre-2001 church sites, followed by California at 56, Ohio at 50, Florida at 49, and Pennsylvania at 47. Those are large states, but the presence of Kentucky at 34 and North Carolina at 42 suggests the early church web grew where church density was high, not just where the tech industry was.
