St. Stephen’s United Church Of Christ
I don’t often blog but I think it is important to share this. Those of us fortunate enough to live in York, PA know what I mean when I say that we have some lovely examples of architecture and meeting places in York. I found a jewel: St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ, located at 1569 West Market St, (717) 854-6736, www.ucc103.com, info at ststephensucc@verizon.net. I walked in from the street, even wearing my work-out jeans, and was welcomed by quiet, down to earth folks with warm hearts “just as I am.” It is a good place to be. I loved how the sunlight comes through the beautiful stained glass windows, surrounding me on all sides with sunlight. I had no idea that the artist who created the windows worked with Louis Comfort Tiffany, but it is apparent on viewing. It was very welcoming environment. I will try to post a few photos but they won’t do this place justice. The beauty of this little church doesn’t stop with it’s windows. The open door and open hearts with which you are met make a positive impression. Everyone walked up and quietly said hi. What a good example they provide. Thanks also to Reverend Scofield for his thought-provoking, down to earth approach to peaceful and uplifting, scripture-based messages, just the right “good word,†plain, simple, and applicable. I think I want to catch the Bible study on Thursday evenings to see what else speaks to him. Other characteristics stand out. St. Stephen’s is so easy to access. The familiar, heart-felt traditional hymns are beautifully sung by the friendly little choir. Folks of all ages and walks of life are welcomed there with open hearts, which extend in outreach to those in the community who may be ill or in assisted living facilities, veterans and those around the world. The kids are so sweet and seem to have fun surrounded by a supportive community. It would be wonderful to see how members and visitors together could help others in the coming years. If you have been wanting to serve others, these folks are finding new ways to serve. I am especially excited about upcoming opportunities to have fun with these folks. The April 16th Free Breakfast with the Bunny, is an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast with games and an Easter egg hunt, for adults and children, should be fun. I know that I recently enjoyed the March madness meatloaf dinner with stewed tomatoes, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, apple sauce, green beans, corn, and all those fabulous desserts! I learned a little about cooking in quantity and it was fun to serve others together. I speak of St. Stephen’s to others I meet in the community through the week because it is like a little jewel you want to share with others. I hope others will come out and experience this place. It is good to be in this beautiful place and let our lights shine and refill our hearts after whatever challenges we may have had during the week. St. Stephen’s is just a good place to feed the mind, body, and spirit. It is too good of a place to miss. 🙂
